CCS Kids team up with FOG's and the Qld State of Origin Team for Maroon Day
| Childhood Cancer Support families had a chance to meet the Qld State of Origin Team and FOG's at McDonalds Wurtulla for the first Maroon Day. The whole team popped in to say hello and sign autograph's for the families before their first training session. The CCS Kids were delighted to meet and have their photo taken with their hero's. This was a great opportunity for the kids to have a day out away from the hospital and enjoyed giving tips to the players in preparation for the first State of Origin game. Some of the FOG's who made the day posible for our CCS kids and their families were Wally, Alfie, Mal, Trevor and Steve. |

| IT was almost noon and mother of two Michelle Prince was sitting in a Mackay doctor’s surgery waiting with her sick son. Not once did she think that over the next few hours here life would be turned upside down as her two-year-old son, Thomas, was diagnosed with leukaemia.
Within 12 hours of the doctor’s appointment, the Prince family was walking thought the cold white halls of Brisbane’s Royal children’s Hospital.
Over the next eight months the family needed somewhere in Brisbane to live while Thomas was going through this intense treatment. That’s when Childhood Cancer Support (CCS) became their saving grace.
"Within 12 hours our lives had been turned upside down,,” Mrs Prince said. "The Last thing you are thinking about when you are jumping onto a plane is where am I going to live, money matters and so forth.” "The CCS was a blessing for us. The CCS is just 500 metres from the hospital, they are fully self-contained units with everything proved for you, including towels and sheets”. "You are able to focus on getting your life back on track and looking after your child. There is also a strong support group and you know you’re not alone, with other families staying there going through a similar situation.” "When I took Tom to the doctors that day, not once did I think that I would need a place like CCS,” Mrs Price said.
The CCS is only available for families who have to travel and need somewhere to stay while their child is going through treatments. It provides financial and emotional support.
But this charity organisation relies on donations, so to help them out the Mackay Quota Club is hosting a Bling It On for Charity cocktail and canapés party at Dolphin Heads Resort on March 28.
Mackay Quota Club president Margaret Hawkins said the party aimed to help raise awareness and funds not only for CCS but also for five Mackay families with children going through cancer treatment who would be sponsored to attend the evening.
"Dolphin Heads is providing the accommodation for the families and we are sponsoring them for the cocktail party.” Ms Hawkins said. ‘The idea is to give them a break and a chance to let down their hair”. "This is strictly an 18 and over event with lots of lucky door prizes to be given away. There will also be a charity auction and live entertainment”.
"Tickets are essential and people need to book now.”
There also will be a bus available from the City Heart for $10 a person for a return trip.
On Sunday Bunnings Warehouse will host a Family Fun Day at Dolphin Heads with a gold coin donation for each activity. Mrs Hawkins said the event, open to the whole community, would run from 10am to 1pm.
Tickets for the cocktail party are available from Dolphin Heads Resort on 5013 9666. For information call Margaret on 4957 4954. |
| Ernst and Young kindly invited our families to join them on the 31st floor of their office building in the city. Everyone enjoyed the breath taking views overlooking the city. They enjoyed a City Cat ride around to New Farm Park where they enjoyed a smorgasboard of sandwiched, cakes and fruit. Ann from 'Look at me' face painting worked her magic turning our little angels into princesses, pussy cats and monsters. |

| Which Bank? the Commonwealth Bank of course!! Pinnacle Team Events in conjunction with Commonwealth Bank presented four of the families staying at CCS with new bikes. The children were overjoyed with the surprise, even taking them for a test drive right then and there. A big thank you goes out the Pennacle Team Events an Commonwealth Bank for supporting our CCS families and bringing a smile to the faces of our special CCS kids. |

CCS Volunteer honoured

IT is not just the time Lois Shinners pours into volunteering, it is the wide variety of organisations she is involved with, which makes her special.
The Albany Creek resident was recognised with an Order of Australia Medal, as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
As well as volunteering at the Royal Children's Hospital for more than 10 years, Ms Shinners has been a volunteer at the All Saints Parish at Albany Creek, Childhood Cancer Support, the Albany Creek Soccer Club and the Brisbane City Football Club. She is also involved with Queensland Leukemia Foundation.
However, Ms Shinners explanation for her love of volunteering is as simple as her involement is long.
"I just enjoy it, we were put on this earth to help one another," she said.
