Beutel Family still call CCS home

After Kye’s diagnosis in October 2005 our lives were turned upside down., as we did not knowing what was ahead for Kye and our family. The hospital found accommodation for us at a nearby unit as we needed to stay in Brisbane closer to the hospital. Our decision was for both of us to stay with Kye not only to be with him 24 hours a day, but also, to support each other as well.

Having two older children staying back at home in Kalbar with family, it was essential for us and Kye that we could see them as much as possible when he was well enough. So alternative accommodation was found at Childhood Cancer Support (CCS) in a much larger unit so our two other children could come and stay with us. We moved into CCS in December 2005.

It is a group of houses made into units for families with children who have cancer, that reside outside the Brisbane area. They are fully self contained and have a homey feeling about them. It was nice to come out of hospital and back to what was going to be our home away from home for the next ten months.

During our time at CCS we met a lot of other families who were going through the same ordeal. The support we received and the friendships our family made we will never forget. The staff were great, always organising special things for the children and adults and were always happy to lend their help if needed.

This journey for Kye and the rest of the family still continues, but we were able to move back to our home in Kalbar in September 2006.

We still visit our friends and staff at CCS on a regular basis when in Brisbane and can’t thank everyone there enough for all their support. As this is not government funded the staff have done a marvellous job in making sure families who stay there are well looked after and make the inner and outer surroundings as comfortable as possible. This organisation relies on donations from the community and is a very worthy cause.

Thanking you,

Gavin, Sharyn, Kye, Jake and Keely Beutel
